Fooding

Beer and Macaroni
After a day of work
It's the only thing that can bring life back
eat and drink

Sometimes Pie
Mostly beer.
But sometimes pie.
tired.
Sleeping while stressed

More Beer.

(This was my late post from last week. New one incoming.)

  1. Hello Chris,

Thanks for posting your poem, it’s very entertaining. One of the first things I notice in the poem is its tone. The speaker in the poem appears to be thoughtful concerning certain events that are a key part, or wanted key part of their day. The descriptions in the poem are very ‘matter of fact’ which adds to it a sense of simplicity. The poem’s content seems to be about delving into routine and how routine can play out as a result of work-related events. Work, for the speaker, seems to be the cause to the effect of wanting “beer and macaroni” (1) and “pie” (5). It’s the particular items that the speaker considers to be key elements to ‘unwinding’ since it “it’s the only thing that can bring life back” (3), that shape the poem’s sense of satire and humor. The commodity of the items “beer” (1) and “pie” (5) is what adds to the humorous nature of the poem.

The straightforward nature of the content in the poem helps bring life to the speaker in the sense that he or she is a believable character. There is a considerable about of contemplation or deliberation present in the poem as the speaker decides what things could be acceptable “fooding:”

    Sometimes Pie
    Most beer.
    But sometimes pie.
    tired (5-8).

It is obvious to me as the reader, that the content already indicates a tired speaker who is an individual debating basic wants and needs because he or she is that tired in the first place. As mentioned, this creates a believable speaker who could truly exist in our world. The poem’s content is practical and rooted in reality; the speaker is not concerned with abstract or excessively theoretical principles.
The poem is 10 lines long, made up of 3 stanzas. There is no consistent symmetry involved with structure, stanza, or line length and this habit is synonymous to the chaotic sleepy content we hear from the speaker.

Overall, I enjoyed the spontaneous topic of the poem and appreciate your attention to structure like stanza and specific punctuation. I look forward to reading your next poem :)

  2. I like poems with beer in them.

But no, I actually relate to the easy-going tone in regards to enjoyable food. Bacon, beer, cake, etc. When I'm eating some of my favorite simple foods, I feel a lot like your poem.
